3. What has been the progress of a given group from K1 to K2?

First a group must be defined for the purposes of selection.
To do this an attribute must be created:

Select Import / Edit Data tab

Now select in the Edit Box: Pupil Level Data:

Ensure that the radio button for Pupil Attributes is highlighted and click Apply bottom left.

You will now be presented with the screen showing the standard attributes, all of which can be filtered on.
Pressing the filtering button brings up the dialogue box in Fig 1.6 above.

The database can also be re-organised by double-clicking the header of the column concerned.

Eg a quick way to enter the NC year group to ensure ease of operation later would be to

Double click on the column header Date of Birth which will bring all pupils into order by DoB.
A range can then be made in the NC Year Group column for pupils whose DoB is greater than or equal to 01-Sept-YYYY and less than or equal to 31-Aug-(YYYY+1).
By going to Tools /Propagate cells in the Menu Bar at the top of the screen a dialogue box is presented. Enter Year 1 …….. KS2 as required and the value will be inserted in the NC Year Group Column range.

However, we have a particular group which we want to track, that of Additional Literacy Support (ALS).
To create a new attribute:

Click on New Attribute

The dialogue box in Fig 3.2 will be displayed which will need to be filled in as is:

The default value can be left blank if desired. Any value can be inserted be it number, letter or a combination. (The note below tells you that for any new pupils added, the default value will be added.)

After entering the required information, press the “Apply” button. You will receive a message to say that the Attribute was created successfully. Click OK. The box remains waiting for another attribute to be added. If this is required follow the same procedure; otherwise, press the “Close” button. A green column will have been placed at the right hand end of the screen. If this cannot be seen use the bottom scroll bar to move across.

You can add as many attributes as you like for whatever reason you wish here are a few suggestions:

Leavers
GCSE groups
Special needs groups
Year Groups

I have added a new attribute and added values to pupils in Fig 3.3:

After adding data to the attributes and the attributes themselves, you will need to press the Commit Change button at the bottom right of your screen.

By pressing the Filtering button we get the Dialogue Box in Fig 1.6

Now click on the Arrow to the right of the box against Pupil Attributes and you will be looking at Fig 3.4 below.

Clicking on our ALS group column header will bring up all pupils in that group (Fig 3.4 below)

The group can now be used anywhere where filtering is allowed in PAT.

To answer our question, we will now return to the Value Added Graph in PAT.

Select Analyse/Export Data

Select Analyse Pupil Level data

Select Value Added Graph
Select KS1 - KS2
Select Year 2003

You should now have a Graph looking like Fig 2.3 above.

By clicking Options at the bottom left of the screen we will get a dialogue box that looks like Fig 3.5 below:

In this Dialogue box we can filter in 2 different ways and alter the look of the graphs by changing colours. You can even draw your own school VA lines.

Filter 1 allows us to highlight a particular group and leave the others in place for comparison, the other excludes non-group members and gives a clear view of the group.
Lets take a look at the first:

In the Dialogue Box Fig 3.5

Select: Show Attribute radio Button in the middle section
Now click on Selection Box below to Highlight these Pupils
Use drop down arrow in box to right to find Y
Select
Click OK

We now have a graph that looks like Fig 3.6:

By double clicking on any pupil spot you can change colours to make the differences more obvious.
The red dots now signify more that one pupil but also one or more of each group so PAT cannot differentiate.
A blue spot indicates 2 or more pupils at the same coordinates but neither carrying the filter value.

PAT can dispose of the non-group members for a clearer look. This is Filter 2:

Click Options and return to Fig 3.5
Click on Normal Graph Radio Button in the Middle Section and now
Click on Pupil Attribute in the Bottom Section

Select ALS from drop down list
Select Y in drop-down box next to ALS box
Click OK

You should see a much simpler graph like Fig 3.7 below:

This being our ALS Group on it's own.

You can filter down to all the preset groups like Gender, Ethnicity etc. It is even possible to set up a customised filter at the bottom in which you can select several options and values.

You can change subjects, years and Key Stage options from the parameter bar and you can print out reports just as Fig 2.7 above.

The same analysis is now available with the CVA Graphs.
